Buying, or creating, gift baskets for children is not so much different from making a gift basket for an adult person. But still, there are some differences and things to consider you might not have thought about. First, and foremost, you have to consider the opinion of the kid’s parents when it comes to certain games and toys. If, for example, the parents don’t allow their kids to play certain video games, it would be cruel to put one of these in the basket. Same for sweets and candies, if parents try to restrict the amount of sugar a child eats, filling a basket with them will not make you friends
So, first you have to consider what the parents allow and then what the kid in question likes. Next thing is to consider the age of the child, whilst a four year old girl will be delighted to find a pink teddy in it, a thirteen year old boy might be less so
And, just a word of warning, whilst parents will approve of gifts with an educational touch such as ‘Punctuation Made Easy‘, for a lot of children this smells too much like school, and they will be not too thrilled about it.
So what are now the best things to put into a kid gift basket?
- Toys and games always go down well, and if you know that the child in question is a big fan of, lets say, Narnia or Harry Potter, you have a wealth of action figures and related video games to choose from.
- Books, kids love reading and smaller children enjoy colorful picture books. Adding a book or two to the mix will most certainly go down well with both, parents and kids.
- Candy, sweets or healthy snacks should be fillers, but not the main items (see above). Try to use them sparingly to fill the gaps, so to speak, but not as the main gift.
- Treasures for a little lady. Most girls love everything that has to do with fashion and beauty. If you know that the girl in question is collecting Barbie dolls, why not get her a new outfit or two for them. Or what about a Barbie Make-Up Set?
- Experimenting and exploring. Kids are curious, they do like to discover new things. A simple microscope or a chemistry experiment kit will delight the more inquisitive ones.
- Crafts. Colors, pens, a make your own card or make your own bracelet set will be welcomed by many children.
- Software, children today grow up with computers, why not encourage them to use them for more than just silly games. There are a lot of great software programs around that are both fun and educational.
After you have filled the basket with the goodies, you might want to wrap it up nicely and add a handwritten card to it, to make your gift even more personal.
